Synonyms: TMCS; Chlorotrimethylsilane; Trimethylsilyl chloride
Trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) is a highly reactive organosilicon liquid that Sarchem Labs supplies as a key silylating reagent for organic synthesis and analytical chemistry. It reacts rapidly with hydroxyl- and amine-containing compounds to install a trimethylsilyl (TMS) protecting or derivatizing group, making it one of the most widely used silylation reagents in the lab. Every lot ships with a Certificate of Analysis and Safety Data Sheet.

Product Description

What is Trimethylchlorosilane?

Trimethylchlorosilane is a small organosilicon molecule in which three methyl groups and one chlorine atom surround a central silicon atom. The silicon-chlorine bond is highly electrophilic and reacts rapidly with alcohols, amines, and other nucleophiles, releasing HCl and forming a new, stable silicon-oxygen or silicon-nitrogen bond — the core reaction behind its use as a silylating agent.

Uses of Trimethylchlorosilane

TMCS’s fast, clean silylation chemistry makes it a standard reagent for protecting hydroxyl groups during multistep organic synthesis and for converting polar, poorly volatile compounds into their trimethylsilyl derivatives ahead of gas chromatography analysis (often paired with hexamethyldisilazane). It’s also used to silanize glass and silica surfaces, rendering them hydrophobic, and as a building block in specialty organosilicon and silicone synthesis.

FAQs: Trimethylchlorosilane

Mainly as a silylating agent for protecting alcohols/amines in organic synthesis and for derivatizing compounds ahead of GC analysis; also used to silanize glass/silica surfaces.

Yes — it's classified Danger, highly flammable, toxic if swallowed or inhaled, and causes severe skin burns and eye damage; it reacts violently with water/moisture, so it must be handled under anhydrous conditions in a fume hood with full PPE.
