Periodic acid Solution | SKU: S2767
Synonyms: Orthoperiodic acid; Paraperiodic acid
Periodic Acid Solution (CAS 10450-60-9) is Sarchem Labs’ high-purity preparation of H5IO6, the strongest of the common oxo-acids of iodine, manufactured to a minimum 99% assay. Chemists prize it for cleanly cleaving vicinal diols, stopping at the aldehyde/ketone stage. Every shipment ships with a COA and SDS.

Applications

Malaprade oxidation — cleaves vicinal diols into carbonyl fragments (organic/carbohydrate synthesis)
Epoxide opening; breaks down alpha-hydroxy acids/amino alcohols
Removes acetonide/THP/acetal protecting groups
Periodic Acid–Schiff (PAS) staining — histology/pathology (glycogen, mucins, basement membranes)
Oxidimetric titration; general strong-oxidizer applications

Product Description

What is Periodic Acid Solution?

Periodic Acid Solution is the aqueous form of periodic acid (H5IO6), a hypervalent iodine oxoacid and one of the strongest oxidizing/diol-cleaving agents used in labs. Iodine sits at +7 oxidation state surrounded by five hydroxyls and one oxo group, giving it unusually strong, controllable oxidizing power.

Uses of Periodic Acid Solution

Its signature use is the Malaprade reaction, cleaving vicinal diols into two carbonyls — core to organic synthesis, natural-product chemistry, and carbohydrate analysis. Also strips acetal-type protecting groups and opens epoxides. Dilute solution is the active oxidant in PAS staining for histology/pathology, and it’s used in oxidimetric titration.
