What is Gabapentin?

Gabapentin is a cyclohexane ring carrying both an aminomethyl group and an acetic acid side chain, a structure designed to resemble the neurotransmitter GABA without acting directly at GABA receptors. Its actual pharmacological target is the α2δ subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels, which is how it’s believed to reduce neuronal excitability in seizure disorders and certain types of nerve pain.
