Diiodomethane, also known as methylene iodide, is a dense, high-refractive-index liquid that Sarchem Labs supplies stabilized with a copper chip to prevent light-induced decomposition. Its unusually high density makes it a standard heavy liquid for mineral and particle-density separation work, while its high refractive index is exploited in optical reference and contact-angle research. Every lot ships with a Certificate of Analysis and Safety Data Sheet.

Product Description

What is Diiodomethane?

Diiodomethane is a simple halomethane in which two hydrogen atoms of methane are replaced by iodine, giving it one of the highest densities of any common laboratory liquid (approximately 3.3 g/cm³) along with a notably high refractive index. Because the carbon-iodine bonds are relatively weak and light-sensitive, commercial diiodomethane is typically stabilized with a small copper chip to scavenge liberated iodine and slow decomposition.

Uses of Diiodomethane

Its exceptional density makes diiodomethane a go-to heavy liquid for separating minerals or particles by density gradient — materials less dense than the liquid float, denser ones sink. Its high refractive index is separately useful as an optical reference standard and in contact-angle/surface-energy research. In organic synthesis, it also serves as a methylene-transfer reagent in select cyclopropanation-type reactions.

Mainly as a heavy liquid for mineral/particle density separation, an optical refractive-index reference standard, and an organic synthesis reagent.

The carbon-iodine bonds are light-sensitive and can slowly decompose, releasing free iodine; a copper chip scavenges that iodine and helps preserve the product's purity and color during storage.

Yes — it's harmful if swallowed and harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects; chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection, and a fume hood are recommended.
