MTAB is a quaternary ammonium surfactant — a positively charged “head group” attached to a 14-carbon (myristyl) tail. That cationic charge is what gives it antimicrobial activity and makes it useful for depositing conditioning/antistatic layers onto negatively charged surfaces like hair and fabric.
MTAB is manufactured into cationic surfactant systems for hair-conditioning and fabric-softening formulations, and into antimicrobial preservative systems for personal-care and industrial products. In research settings, it’s also used as a membrane-solubilizing surfactant in protein-quantification assays.

Mainly as a cationic surfactant in personal-care manufacturing (conditioners, fabric softeners) and as an antimicrobial/preservative agent, plus membrane-research applications in the lab.
Yes — it's classified Danger, harmful if swallowed, causes serious eye damage, and is very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects; avoid environmental release and use standard PPE.
